Pioneer Stories
Five Years of Powering Change
Knowle Park Primary has been championing battery recycling for the past five years 🙂 and sustainability is firmly embedded in school life. We are proud to hold Eco-Schools accreditation, achieving one year with Merit and three years with Distinction. Battery recycling, through The Big Battery Hunt, has been a consistent and ongoing thread in our Eco-Schools work.
Our Eco Squad leads the charge. They regularly deliver assemblies to promote battery recycling and have shared your video many times to inspire the whole school community. Every week, batteries are carefully counted, the battery bin is regularly collected, and progress is shared widely through school newsletters, text messages home, and social media posts.
The impact has been huge.
2021–22: 20,000+ batteries collected
2022–23: 23,000 batteries
2023–24: 12,663 batteries
2024–25: 5,723 batteries
2025–26 (so far, from September): 2,508 batteries
We genuinely love counting the batteries! One of our favourite moments from a few years ago was seeing the flags appear on the UK map. It was exciting to see what other schools were doing and to spot ourselves on the map, knowing we were part of something bigger.
Since September, we have collected 2,508 batteries. Knowle Park Primary is a school of 630 pupils, and our Eco Squad surveyed every class to understand participation. Around 145 pupils are actively involved, showing just how powerful pupil-led action can be.
Battery recycling isn’t a one-off initiative at Knowle Park Primary — it’s a habit, a shared responsibility, and something our pupils take real pride in.
